Barcelona’s next generation: The youngsters shaping a new era
Behind the established stars, four young players are already shaping the club’s future
Barcelona have been at the apex of women’s football this decade. They have won multiple accolades at both domestic and European level, scored countless goals and have had the service of some of the best players to ever play the game. The quality of their first choice lineup is undeniable but their true strength lies in the quality of their young crop. Barcelona have acquired the services of some of the best upcoming talents in the world, some coming from their famed academy.
Clàudia Pina and Vicky López are prime examples of this. They rank second and third in the Liga F goal contribution list, with 20 and 14 goal contributions respectively. Pina is only one goal behind Ewa Pajor in the Golden Boot race, with 15 goals to her name. She has evolved from being a prodigy into a player capable of winning games for both club and country.
López was recently awarded the inaugural Kopa Trophy as the best young player in the world. She has dazzled defences with her technical ability and vision, combining well with her team-mates in the final third. She has also made her mark with Spain women's national football team at senior level, scoring in the UEFA Women's Nations League final and impressing at the Euros last summer.
The Blaugrana have harnessed the best versions of these youngsters, producing some of the best players for club and country, and there are many more in line. This season in particular has been a blessing in disguise for them, allowing them to spot these talents as replacements for their ageing core.
Here are four gems at Barcelona who could be big stars in the near future.
