If Thursday night is to be a success for Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, they will have to follow in the footsteps of their north London rivals. With a two-goal deficit against Manchester City from last week’s first leg, they face an uphill battle to make the Champions League semi-finals.
Success in the Champions League for Chelsea is the modus operandi of each season. There is no doubt of their domestic prowess - their eight-point lead at the top of the WSL is testament to that - and the European competition is their final frontier.
The Champions League is also clearly Bompastor’s driving ambition. Having come from a Lyon team that outspent and outperformed the opposition in France, their continental performance is the barometer for success in the playing and coaching environment.
