You have to go back to 2004 for the last time a team overcame a two-goal deficit to progress in a Champions League knockout match. It was Italian side Torres who had gone two goals up, only for a plucky English team known as Arsenal to beat them 4-1 in the second leg. Chelsea will attempt to do something similar next Thursday after they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City at the Joie Stadium.

The amount of time since someone has done that only highlights the scale of the task, although Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor can point to when she turned around a two-goal deficit against Paris Saint-Germain in last year’s semi-final first leg.

The question Chelsea will need to answer over the next week is: how did they find themselves in this position in the first place?
