Chelsea are a winning machine, the juggernaut of women’s football in England. The Blues have won six consecutive Women’s Super League titles since the 2019-20 season, going unbeaten in two of those campaigns. Before this weekend it had been 585 days since they last lost a WSL game, that defeat coming against Liverpool in May 2024.

All that changed when they faced Brian Sorensen’s Everton. Sixty-four touches in the opposition box, 53 crosses and 30 shots later: Chelsea 0-1 Everton.

Chelsea were unbeaten in 34 WSL games, unbeaten in the league under Sonia Bompastor, unbeaten at home in the last two years and unbeaten against Everton since 2013. The Toffees had zero clean sheets this season and had just one win coming into this game.

Football can be a funny game, but what went wrong for Chelsea?
