After England had somehow triumphed over Sweden on Thursday night, the only thing left on the Stadion Letzigrund pitch in Zurich was a string of unfurled white tape.

Discarded between the halfway line and the penalty spot, that piece of medical wrapping belonged to Lucy Bronze.

Bronze self-applied the wrapping to her right thigh because she “felt a bit tight” and “had to keep going” as the match headed to extra time.
