For England, the question about who would be starting at Euro 2025 became a straightforward one when Mary Earps announced she was retiring from international football at the end of May.
Earps was set to be included in England’s 23-player roster for the Euros, but opted to retire from international duty ahead of England’s Uefa Nations League games against Portugal and Spain.
Any potential debates about who head coach Sarina Wiegman might pick were squashed in an instant. Hannah Hampton, who had been starting under Wiegman in several games across the past 12 months, was the undeniable number one.
