Euro 2025 daily newsletter: Day eight
Germany and Sweden advance to quarter-finals, all to play for in Group D
Germany and Sweden have both secured back-to-back wins to qualify for the quarter-finals with a game to spare. With one group match remaining, the two sides play each other next in a clash that will determine who tops the table. Currently, Sweden sit just ahead, only one point clear of Germany due to goal difference. Finishing first could potentially mean a more favourable draw in the knockout rounds, so it will be a thrilling match-up, and their toughest contest in the competition yet.

Germany 2 Denmark 1
Denmark got on the scoresheet first, thanks to Amalie Vangsgaard’s brilliant strike into the bottom right corner of the net. However, Germany – supported by a home-like atmosphere just over the border in Basel – steadily took control of the match and mounted an excellent comeback. After two VAR decisions for a goal and a penalty went against them, the third review finally went their way. Sjoeke Nüsken stepped up and converted a penalty to level the score. This was followed up by Lea Schüller’s clinical finish in the 66th minute after capitalising on a poor Danish clearance to put Germany in the lead which they held until the final whistle.
The match also set a new record for the highest attendance for a Women’s Euro group stage match not involving the host: 34,165.
Poland 0 Sweden 3
Sweden put three goals past Poland, sealing their spot in the quarter-finals. Much of the Swedish attacking threat came from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd on the right wing, whose precise crosses continued to cause problems for Poland’s defence. Her efforts paid off when Stina Blackstenius scored their first goal, followed by goals from Kosovare Asllani and Lina Hurtig in the second half.
Sweden executed their defensive game plan brilliantly by tightly marking Ewa Pajor, often double- or triple-teaming her, effectively nullifying the threat. Despite Sweden’s dominance, Poland continued to fight and came close to scoring a consolation goal in the final minute, only to be denied by the post.
