Euro 2025 daily newsletter: Day six
The first side through to quarter-finals and Group B back in action
And just like that, we have the first quarter-finalists. It feels like Euro 2025 has only just kicked off, but with the pace, drama, and quality on show, it is flying by. As Group A wrapped up its second round of matches, here are the results and what they mean for the teams involved.
Results
Norway 2 Finland 1
An early cross in the third minute of the match led to an own goal by Finland’s Eva Nyström, putting Norway in the lead. This was Norway’s second fastest goal ever, taking a total of 129 seconds to score. Finland responded through Oona Sevenius, who made it 1–1 in the 32nd minute with a clinical finish. Despite Norway looking disordered and, frankly, the inferior side at times, the winner came late in the game from Caroline Graham Hansen which put them on top at the final whistle.
Switzerland 2 Iceland 0
After a first goal that was overruled by VAR due to a foul in the build-up, Switzerland took control in the second half and scored two goals to secure their first win of the tournament. Géraldine Reuteler broke the deadlock in the 76th minute, and Alayah Pilgrim sealed the win deep into stoppage time, keeping their knockout hopes alive.
News
Norway are officially the first team through to the quarter-finals, as that win over Finland sealed their position as leaders of Group A. Iceland have now suffered two defeats, which unfortunately means they are eliminated from the tournament. Up next is a crucial clash between Finland and Switzerland – a must-win showdown for both teams.
Spain’s Aitana Bonmati is expected to start against Belgium today. It will be her first start since being hospitalised with viral meningitis just before the Euros kicked off. She came on for the last 10 minutes of Spain’s 5-0 win over Portugal last Thursday.
What’s on today
Spain vs Belgium 17:00 BST - Stockhorn Arena, Thun
Portugal vs Italy 20:00 BST - Stade de Genève, Geneva
A Spanish win would guarantee a place in the quarter-finals as the leaders of the group, and Italy could also secure progression with a win. Losses for Belgium and Portugal would knock them out of contention.
