On day three of Euro 2025, football proved once again why it is more than just a game, as the day commenced with the devastating news of the deaths of Liverpool and Portugal player Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva. A minute’s silence was held before both matches to honour the brothers, who died in a car accident – a reminder of the fragility of life.
Italy and Spain were the match winners and made clear statements to their opponents with their performances.

Belgium 0-1 Italy
Italy opened their tournament with a win over Belgium, securing all three points. Against a picturesque backdrop in Sion, Belgium looked the more dangerous side in the first half, creating plenty of chances, with key player Tessa Wullaert pivotal to their attacking play. However, Italy were the team to make the breakthrough just before half-time, with Arianna Caruso producing a brilliant, composed finish, which was the turning point.

Spain 5-0 Portugal
Spain’s first match showed exactly why they are favourites to win the tournament. The reigning world champions showed no signs of decline in their level as they delivered a masterclass against Portugal. Scoring five goals in their first game – Esther González (two), Vicky Lopez, Alexia Putellas, and Cristina Martín-Prieto – Spain showcased the talent and depth of their squad. González scored within the first 90 seconds of the match, and Martín-Prieto finished with a fantastic header in the final minute of stoppage time, highlighting the consistent pressure and threat Spain posed throughout. Aitana Bonmatí was even subbed on with 10 minutes remaining, despite being in hospital with viral meningitis just five days ago.
