The final countdown: latest news ahead of England-Spain final today
As we head into the final match of Euro 2025, here are the latest team updates ahead of England and Spain’s showdown.
There were concerns about Lauren James’s fitness after she came off with an ankle injury in England’s previous match, but Sarina Wiegman put those fears to rest: “We had 23 players on the pitch today and everyone came through. If everyone recovers well then we have everyone fit for tomorrow."
Likewise, Spain’s manager Montse Tomé confirmed a full squad: “We have the team we want to have. We have the team we have been creating and building and working on during this year. We have been fine-tuning to reach the point we are in with the players that represent what we feel."
Go deeper: Where the final will be lost and won.
While Spain come into the final narrowly ahead as favourites, England have already proved this year that they can beat the reigning world champions. Captain Leah Williamson said: “I don’t think there’s a clear underdog in this but we go in against the world champions tomorrow and that’s not an easy job.”

A victory would be historic for either team. England are chasing consecutive European titles, and Spain are hoping to win the Euros for the first time in their history. But beyond silverware, the significance of this final runs deeper. Spain captain Irene Paredes spoke about the impact of winning the 2023 World Cup: “Since 2023 we made big steps forwards…We broke many obstacles, we are references for boys and girls in society but we still have things to do.”
No matter the outcome, this final promises to be a celebration of everything this tournament has showcased: resilience, drama, rising stars, and the relentless growth of women’s football across Europe. Whether England make history with back-to-back titles or Spain finally lift the European trophy, both teams have already inspired millions. One final chapter remains in what has been an unforgettable Euros. See you at kickoff!
