Fan tension returns after United's Anfield defeat
United's luck runs out as fan frustrations come back to the surface
On Friday night, Manchester United Women suffered a 3-1 defeat away to rivals Liverpool which is only their second WSL defeat of the season. A 3-1 defeat last season was an all too common occurrence in the big games, however this season the most United have conceded in a single game was two (Manchester City away.) The result brought back fan discontent that has been brewing throughout the last two seasons. In his post-match interview with MUTV, Marc Skinner called the performance “uncharacteristic”, but has this result been coming?
Missing Miyazawa?
The big talking point from the starting 11 was around the midfield. Grace Clinton started alongside Ella Toone and Dominique Janssen, which meant Hinata Miyazawa missed out. The Japanese midfielder’s performances since she became a regular starter in the side have been excellent and added crucial balance to the team from both an attacking and defending point of view.
Against Liverpool, United’s midfield lacked that energy and ability to progress the ball through the middle, which made the team very easy to defend against. United attempted to go out wide but with little success at breaking down the Liverpool backline. A question Skinner will need to answer is how he can get the best out of the talent at his disposal given Clinton and Toone’s tendency to occupy similar positions on the pitch.
