Chelsea are once again WSL champions. With two games to go, Chelsea have won the league title in one of the most dominant campaigns we’ve ever seen.
Sonia Bompastor’s side clinched a sixth consecutive WSL title, eighth overall, on Wednesday night. All they needed was a point against Manchester United after Arsenal’s shock 5-2 defeat at Aston Villa. In the end, they claimed a 17th win of the season thanks to a late Lucy Bronze header at Leigh Sports Village.
This title win feels different to what we had seen under Bompastor’s predecessor Hayes, despite the continued theme of unstoppable dominance. Never before has a side managed to wrap up the title this early.
Chelsea’s 2024-25 campaign has played out against the backdrop of European pressure and the continued search for a first Champions League title. That narrative has been a distraction from what has been happening over the course of the last nine months.
In reality, Chelsea have blown away the competition in the WSL. In a season in which there was a window of opportunity with Bompastor arriving in England for the first time and filling the huge shoes of the departing Hayes, Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United all failed to apply any real pressure. That was largely down to the relentless nature of Chelsea’s domestic season, but there is something to be said about just how far they pulled away and how quickly.
