Skinner's shock exit leaves United without a head coach just four weeks before the start of the WSL season.
It’s a departure that felt both shocking and expected at the same time.
On Monday morning, while the WSL was gearing up for another week of pre-season hype, news broke that Marc Skinner had left his role as Manchester United head coach by mutual consent.
The Cutback understands that Skinner offered his resignation, and after discussions it was agreed to part ways.
The timing is stark. Skinner and United have split just four weeks before the start of the new season, and in the midst of a transfer window in which United desperately need to do business.
However, the reality of the decision makes far more sense, and has been a long time in the making.
For several years, Skinner has been managing within restricted means as United’s hierarchy have been vocal about the cost burden of the women’s team.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United co-owner, has indicated in interviews that the men’s team are his priority, telling the United We Stand magazine in 2024 that it was his “main issue”, adding “there’s only so much that you can do, and our focus has been on the men’s team.”
Ratcliffe has also been criticised for referring to the women’s side as “girls” and failing to appear at major sporting moments, such as United’s recent Women’s FA Cup final appearances at Wembley.
