Leah Williamson set for period on sidelines after knee surgery
The England captain sustained an injury to her knee during Euro 2025 campaign
England captain Leah Williamson will be out for a number of weeks after having surgery on her knee.
The defender has undergone a procedure after sustaining a knee injury during England’s victorious Euro 2025 campaign.
Williamson experienced swelling on her right knee after England’s historic penalty-shootout win over Spain in the Euro 2025 final July. It is the same leg that she sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury to back in 2023, but the two injuries are unrelated.
Williamson underwent surgery to clean her knee upon rejoining Arsenal for pre-season and is already undertaking a rehab programme to return to fitness.
She’s expected to be out for several weeks and miss the start of the WSL season.
The 28-year-old led England to a second-successive European title last month, starting in all of the Lionesses’ fixtures in Switzerland.
Williamson missed the 2023 Women’s World Cup after tearing her ACL while playing for Arsenal in the WSL in April 2023. She returned to the pitch 10 months later.
