The dust has settled on a disappointing and difficult season for Manchester City. Another campaign in which they’ve watched their rivals succeed.

One wonders what it must feel like to watch Chelsea claim a domestic treble, to see Arsenal compete in a Champions League final, or to see Manchester United celebrate their return to Europe and an FA Cup final? How must it sting to know that City at one point looked stronger than all those teams – only to end the season with nothing.

City’s ambitions of winning the WSL have been long forgotten, as they are instead confronted with the fact that they will not even have the chance to compete in Europe next season. During the WSL era, City have only finished outside the top three twice before.

The inquest will be long and painful, but it must be meticulous if things are to get better next year. Because City’s season comes down to this: five costly WSL defeats, four equally damaging draws, three cup competitions thrown away, two unsuccessful managers, one point outside the Champions League spots and zero trophies.
