Manchester United and Spurs in the hunt for Swedish international Hanna Lundkvist
The full-back is set to become a free agent following the end of her contract with San Diego Wave
Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are chasing the signing of 23-year-old Swedish full-back Hanna Lundkvist, The Cutback understands.
Sources have told The Cutback that United are confident of striking a deal but there is strong competition from fellow WSL side Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain in France.
Lundkvist is preparing to enter free agency following the end of her contract with the NWSL’s San Diego Wave, where she has played since February 2024. She featured 26 times this season and was also part of the squad that recently won the World Sevens small-sided event in Fort Lauderdale.
The full-back signed an initial one-year deal with the Wave with a mutual option that was activated for the 2025 season.
On Tuesday, the Wave announced that the club were in “active discussions” with Lundkvist and several other players that were out of contract after the season. However, The Cutback understands that Lundkvist’s preference is to move back to Europe.
Prior to her move to the USA, Lundkvist played for Atletico Madrid and Hammarby.
Manchester United are expected to have a busy January transfer window as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the Women’s Champions League knockout phase. Marc Skinner’s side currently sit third in the WSL, seven points behind league leaders Manchester City.
Last weekend, Skinner was vocal about the transfer activity he hopes to see in January, saying after the victory over West Ham that the club needed “to be aggressive in the window and bring in new players that help support the growth of the team”. Right-back is an area of the team that United need depth, as Jayde Riviere has played the majority of games across all competitions.
Tottenham Hotspur have already had a record-setting window as they secured the signing of highly-rated Norwegian international Signe Gaupset for a club-record fee of £378,000.
Gaupset will join on 1 January from SK Brann, where Spurs manager Martin Ho was head coach for two years.
