Manchester United have not had the flashiest summer window, but a late move to sign Rebeca Bernal away from the Washington Spirit looks like smart business.
A track record of success that includes four Liga MX Femenil titles and appearances in 10 major finals (including last year’s NWSL Championship and the 2025-26 Concacaf W Champions Cup) speaks to Bernal’s credentials as a serial winner.
Bernal has largely been a fixture in the Spirit midfield this season, appearing in all 22 of the club’s competitive fixtures (starting 19). Despite setting up as a midfield anchor, the 5-foot-6 Bernal has popped up with three goals in 2026, speaking to both her physical strength and excellent timing inside the penalty area on set pieces.
Washington signed Bernal heading into the 2025 season to solve a difficult problem: club legend Andi Sullivan tore multiple knee ligaments late in 2024, and would miss further time coming back from maternity leave. These were huge shoes to fill, particularly from a leadership and organizational standpoint, and Bernal has done admirably over the last 18 months.
The step from Liga MX Femenil stardom to NWSL has proven difficult at times, with players who dominated the former league finding themselves with a fight on their hands to start matches in the U.S. top flight. From that perspective, Bernal has had real success, establishing herself as first choice even as manager Adrián González toggled between different systems.
The challenge at Man United, where trophies are less an expectation than a hope, will be a new experience. However, Bernal’s career indicates that she is well-prepared for the change, and could drive her new side to better days.
Bernal’s role at the Spirit
After receiving a hero’s farewell with Rayadas, Bernal arrived at a Spirit side in need of central solidity. Then-manager Jonatan Giráldez had to improvise in the initial aftermath of Sullivan’s injury, but Washington added Bernal and Japan midfielder Narumi Miura in an attempt to bring balance to a midfield that lacked a stable platform at its base.
