Alexia Putellas’ smile at the end of Spain’s 6-2 win over Belgium was more than just a celebration. The beaming grin was a signal that her side are showing no signs of slowing down in Switzerland.

Spain continued to show why they are one of the favourites for Euro 2025 with an emphatic win in Thun. The result means that they are already through to the knockout stages with a game to spare after Italy drew 1-1 with Portugal in the later game in Group B.

It was an end-to-end encounter that was summed up by constant reactions and responses from both sides. In the first-half, Spain scored the first and Belgium responded with a goal three minutes later, then the world champions scored again to lead 2-1 at the break.

Then, once play restarted, Belgium netted another, and Spain once again responded, this time showing no mercy as Montse Tomé’s side went on to score four goals in the 40 minutes after Belgium pulled it back to 2-2.

In the first half, Belgium were defending well in a 5-3-2 formation, managing to keep Spain quiet and all while exploiting their opponent’s defensive flaws. In the second period, Spain drowned out any Belgium attack and continued to put non-stop pressure on the low block, opening the path to score four more goals.

In just two Euro 2025 matches, Spain have scored 11 goals and conceded just two. Esther Gonzalez and Putellas are currently tied for the tournament’s golden boot with three goals each.

Even with Belgium defending in a low block, making it hard for Spain to find space to thrive in, they managed to score six goals.
