The race for Europe’s most coveted price concludes on Saturday 24 May, when Arsenal take on FC Barcelona in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final.

Catalan club Barca are eyeing their fourth title. A win would make them just the second team in the competition’s history to lift the trophy in three consecutive seasons.

Arsenal, meanwhile, could win their first honours on this stage since 2007, when they won the continental treble.

Each side has had varying routes to the final, the former cruising through the knockouts in top form, while the latter pulled off comebacks at each stage after initially coming through the qualification rounds.

As the final outing of the 2024-2025 season nears, here are the key things you need to know heading into the weekend’s showstopper.

Uefa Women’s Champions League 2024-25 final: Arsenal v Barcelona preview.

Despite welcoming new coach Pere Romeu at the start of the campaign, it has been business as usual for Barcelona both domestically and in Europe. An opening group stage defeat to Manchester City kickstarted their efforts in the Champions League, but they went on to top the group, winning five straight games and booking a place in the last eight.

In the quarter-final, Wolfsburg failed to threaten their defence, with the Spaniards sailing through courtesy of a 10-2 win on aggregate. A similar tale unfolded in the semi-final when they dismantled Chelsea, reaching their fifth successive European final with a win of 8-2 across two legs.

Arsenal’s road to Lisbon has been quite the opposite, beginning their journey in the first round of qualifying before eventually reaching the group stage. They opened their account with a damming 5-2 defeat to Bayern Munich, which would play a crucial role in the departure of former head coach Jonas Eidevall in October.

Assistant manager Renee Slegers took the reigns and guided the Gunners to five wins from five, qualifying for the knockouts as group winners. They went into the second leg of both the quarter and semi finals facing down the barrel of defeat against Real Madrid and Lyon, respectively. On each occasion Arsenal mustered up an inspired performance to turn the tide in their favour and reach a first European final since 2007.

If history has anything to say about Saturday’s high-stakes clash, fans can expect a plethora of goals. But predicting a winner becomes harder when considering their head-to-head record. Other than a pre-season friendly in 2019, Arsenal and Barcelona have locked horns just four times in a competitive capacity. There is virtually nothing to separate their record – four games played, two wins each, and eight goals scored for either side. While the North London club dominated the fixture in 2012-2013, the Spaniards have enjoyed more recent success in 2021-2022, when they bettered their opponents in both group stage encounters.

While Barca have form firmly on their side, Arsenal have proven on multiple occasions that they are not a team to be discounted, making for an exciting final to see off the current campaign.
