Welsh dreams dashed by France as Fishlock makes history
Cymru staring at early Euros exit after opponents run out 4-1 winners

Wales’ dreams of getting out of Euro 2025’s group of death are as good as over, after they were defeated 4-1 by France in St. Gallen.
France started with a real swagger after their impressive win over England in their opener, and just eight minutes in they broke the deadlock. A corner evaded Welsh heads before making its way to Clara Mateo, who struck a sumptuous volley into the roof of the net.
In past games, Wales have crumbled after conceding, but this time was different. Ceri Holland broke down the left with gusto, and while she was dispossessed in the box, the ball rolled for Jess Fishlock to poke home Cymru’s first goal at a major tournament. The assistant referee’s pesky offside flag threatened to take the goal away from Fishlock for a perceived offside in the buildup, but VAR came to her rescue. Another iconic moment for Wales’ most iconic player.
The goal shocked France, who were initially unable to find a response. Laurent Bonadei’s team were forced to settle for potshots from distance which weren’t testing Safia Middleton-Patel.
