Just three matches into the new National Women’s Soccer League season and the San Diego Wave have caused a big splash.

The California side have signed US forward Catarina Macario from Chelsea for a reported fee of $300,000 (£224,000). The 26-year-old has agreed a deal until the end of 2030, with Sportico reporting the contract to be worth $8 million. A sum that would make her the highest-paid player in the women’s game.

The signing ends months of speculation about the forward’s future after she was left out of Chelsea’s roster for the Champions League knockout stages, and missed the most recent USWNT camp through injury.
